ORBITRAP

This is a demonstration of the image current detection from the ions trapped by an orbitrap

NOTE: image charge detection is available with SIMAX Pro only

This example demonstrates a very powerful option included into SIMAX Pro package – a detection of the image current from the ions trapped by an orbitrap.

An outer barrel-like electrode and a coaxial inner spindle-like electrode create an electrostatic potential well, which traps ions in an orbital motion around the spindle electrode.

The image current from the trapped ions is detected and converted to a mass spectrum using the Fourier transform of the frequency signal.

In this demo we don’t follow the geometry of a real Orbitrap ion trap analyser commercially produced by Thermo Fisher Scientific.

The electric field and electrodes in the present example are generated based on the theory of the hyper-logarithmic fields.

The field is generated using the above equation for K = 1000 V and R = 20 mm. The model has been created with the grid step of 0.02mm.The gap between the outer electrodes is 0.2 mm.

Axial oscillations of ion rings can be detected in SIMAX by two different tools: by SAMPLING tool, or by IMAGE CHARGE tool.
